How to keep your smart home secure

With the rise of new technologies, smart homes have become incredibly popular, transforming how we live and interact with our living spaces. Yet sadly, smart home devices can sometimes be at risk, meaning it’s important to implement security measures.

What are smart homes?

Smart homes or “home automation” allow homeowners to control their devices remotely. Since they are all connected to the internet, they can be controlled from anywhere.

According to Statista, the number of active smart households in the UK is expected to reach 29.70m users by 2027.

What are security threats for smart homes?

Smart homes are revolutionary as they are convenient and provide more comfort to household owners. However, like any other smart device, they face threats such as invasion of privacy or data breach.

For instance, hackers can remotely control Internet of Things (IoT) garage door locks and can let their accomplices inside. They can also issue voice commands on their own if the smart speakers have been hijacked.

There have also been some incidents where smart home devices were used to harass or frighten another person

Securing your smart home devices

Smart homes are becoming an integral part of new homeowners in the UK and installing security measures is the best approach to prevent attacks on their IoT devices.

Change default passwords

People often forget to change their passwords, which is probably one of the most common mistakes. Using stronger and unique passwords will serve as a barrier against brute force or unwanted access.

Map all connected devices

Ensure that all the devices are connected to the same network; their settings, credentials and steps should be well documented.

Turn on the 2-step verification

Because it requires an extra step, users occasionally choose to forego the second verification method (2SV), but it can make it harder for criminals to access your account even if they know the password.

Always backup your data

Ransomware works by denying a user or an organisation access to its personal data or files. Regular backups will enable you to restore your systems and not lose data.

Install the latest updates on your devices

Updates are available to ensure that your devices are secure and working properly. Turn on automatic updates on all your devices.

What to do if your smart home has been compromised?

As of next year (2024), new security laws will come into effect placing obligations on manufacturers to increase the security of their smart devices.

If you believe that your devices have been affected:

  • Contact your manufacturer
  • Reset all your devices
